Feature 1st Place 50 Points
Photographer: Joseph Garza, Tribune-Star
Image:f_80-santa
Judges Comments:
We like the composition of the frame, the way its composed draws you into the moment. We also like that the image shows a behind-the-scenes moment.
Feature 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Joseph Garza, Tribune-Star

Judges Comments:
The framing of the little girls and their aunt in the closet draws the eyes directly to the moment between ZyLynn and Odie. Its a tender moment that immediately conveys the excitement of a new home.
Feature 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Joseph Garza, Tribune-Star

Judges Comments:
We loved all the different reactions on the childrens faces. We like that the photographer filled the frame with a sea of children instead of a wide/loose image because it immediately draws the viewer into the girl in the center of the frame.
General_News 1st Place Cream of the Crop 60 Points
Photographer: MaCabe Brown, Courier & Press
Image:gn_116-portal
Judges Comments:
We appreciated the creative approach to framing the skateboarder inside the portal. The image also shows a sense of place, with people milling around on the grass and skating in the background.

Judges Comments:
We appreciate this story-telling moment. Its not always easy to catch a genuine reaction from a politician while they are on stage during a meeting in a dimly lit conference room.
General_News 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Joseph Garza, Tribune-Star
Image:gn_80-food
Judges Comments:
Its a clean, easy-to-read image. We appreciate that the photographer took the time to get Terries name and a little more information about her. The caption elevated this image for us. We do wish that the photographer got closer and possibly waited for Terrie to look up so the viewer could see more of her face and connect with her better.
Multiple_Entry 1st Place 50 Points
Photographer: Joseph Garza, Tribune-Star
Image:m_80-grinch_01
Judges Comments:
Note – This category only had two entries.
This package rose above to first place because we found ourselves reacting to and laughing at multiple images in the series. The photographer did a good job of capturing the kids emotions and adding more context with each new image.
Multiple_Entry 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Richard Sitler, The Herald Bulletin
Image:m_189-home-01
Judges Comments:
We appreciate that the photographer went back multiple times to document the home being built. There were nice moments along the way, but the edit made it feel a little bit process-heavy. Our favorite image was the ender, with the little girl looking up at the new ceiling fan light.
Sports_Action 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Joseph Garza, Tribune-Star
Image:sa_80-catch
Judges Comments:
We liked the reaction of the players face in a sea of tangled arms. It would be stronger with a crop on the left side to get rid of the player with their back turned to the camera.
Sports_Action 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Joseph Garza, Tribune-Star
Image:sa_80-bend
Judges Comments:
This is a clean, nicely cropped image. We like the body language of the wrestlers and the referee watching with his whistle ready.
Sports_Action 1st Place 50 Points
Photographer: MaCabe Brown, Courier & Press
Image:sa_116-shoeblock
Judges Comments:
What a wild moment. We wondered if this image would have been stronger with a much tighter crop of the players (ball and shoe) because the blue banner on the bottom would have been less distracting.
Sports_Action HM Place 10 Points
Photographer: AJ Mast, Independent Photojournalist
Image:sa_1-helmet
Judges Comments:
Nice job capturing the reaction of the player whose helmet fell off. We think this image could have been stronger if cropped in closer to the players so the situation could be read quickly.
Sports_Feature 1st Place 50 Points
Photographer: AJ Mast, Independent Photojournalist
Image:sf_1-smile
Judges Comments:
We liked the composition of this image and the nice look between player and person on the right with the added layer of other fans in the background. The lower angle allowed for a more unique, clean view.
Sports_Feature 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: MaCabe Brown, Courier & Press
Image:sf_116-surf
Judges Comments:
A nice fan moment. Its clean and every person in the frame has a reaction that brings the viewer right back to the body surfer at the center of the frame.
Sports_Feature 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: MaCabe Brown, Courier & Press
Image:sf_116-starter
Judges Comments:
We appreciate that the photographer got down low and exposed for the highlights. The arm in the center of the frame, above the players head, is a bit distracting.
