Winners

Feature 1st Place 50 Points
Photographer: Joseph Garza, Tribune-Star
Image:f_80-foam
Judges Comments:
Lots to like in this category, but the winners stood out. A name would have helped on this frame, but we realize the event is, well, chaos.

Feature 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: MaCabe Brown, Courier & Press

Judges Comments:
We loved the emotion — and the rain.

Feature 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Jonah Hinebaugh, Logansport Pharos-Tribune
Image:f_168-dance
Judges Comments:
A really tender moment. Well done.

Feature HM Place 10 Points
Photographer: Michael Caterina, South Bend Tribune
Image:f_63-car
Judges Comments:
Lovely color and competition, but knocked out of the top three by faces and emotion.

General_News 1st Place 50 Points
Photographer: Denny Simmons, Courier & Press
Image:gn_78-vote
Judges Comments:
We struggled a bit with our 1-2-3 in this category, but just kept coming back to this striking voting photo

General_News 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Kelly Lafferty, Kokomo Tribune
Image:gn_57-worship
Judges Comments:
Great seeing and composition.

General_News 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Jeremy Hogan, Freelance
Image:gn_88-eviction
Judges Comments:
Intense scene and moment, but a lack of names or more context in the caption ultimately dropped this down the winners list.

General_News HM Place 10 Points
Photographer: Jacob Musselman, The Lebanon Reporter (CNHI)
Image:gn_170-booyah
Judges Comments:
Nice face and moment, but, well, no caption attached (at least that the judges could see) so recognized with HM.

Multiple_Entry 1st Place Cream of the Crop 60 Points
Photographer: Denny Simmons, Courier & Press
Image:m_78-kinsly_01
Judges Comments:
Story following prep softball players road back recovering from a car accident rose to the top as the most ambitious storytelling in the category. Tough story that could have been sequenced a bit better, but solid moments and solid storytelling.

Multiple_Entry 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Denny Simmons, Courier & Press
Image:m_78-grads_01
Judges Comments:
Graduation season had many entries from commencement ceremonies, and while not really a story, per se, this collection is a fine collection with some not-so-obvious moments.

Multiple_Entry 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Kelly Lafferty, Kokomo Tribune
Image:m_57-littleleague_01
Judges Comments:
A couple of zingers in this Little League collection helped this entry rise into the top three.

Sports_Action 1st Place 50 Points
Photographer: AJ Mast, Independent Photojournalist
Image:sa_1-hurdle
Judges Comments:
Great face, angle and action rose to the top of a very competitive category.

Sports_Action 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Joseph Garza, Tribune-Star
Image:sa_80-dive
Judges Comments:
Excellent action from a number of top notch baseball/softball photos in the category.

Sports_Action 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Denny Simmons, Courier & Press
Image:sa_78-toss
Judges Comments:
Unfortunately nipped off at the feet (weve all been there) but excellent face and action kept this baseball photo in the winners list.

Sports_Action HM Place 10 Points
Photographer: Robert Goddin, Freelance
Image:sa_190-splash
Judges Comments:
A nice steeplechase chaos photo that dropped just out of the top three.

Sports_Feature 1st Place 50 Points
Photographer: AJ Mast, Independent Photojournalist
Image:sf_1-woohoo
Judges Comments:
Tons of awesome emotion in this category made choosing three tough, but raw emotion (from a prelim no less) stuck out.

Sports_Feature 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Jonah Hinebaugh, Logansport Pharos-Tribune
Image:sf_168-wipe
Judges Comments:
Context from the scoreboard helped this dejection photo rise above other photos with strong emotion.

Sports_Feature 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Joseph Garza, Tribune-Star
Image:sf_80-homer
Judges Comments:
More great emotion
