Photographer: Sarah Ann Jump/The Herald

Judges Comments:
2nd: Close call between second and third place. The image grows on you each time you look at it. The genuine interaction between George Washington and the student is a nice moment. Great patience and getting on the same level helped the photo.

Judges Comments:
Tough category. Remember, having content in a photograph is what we aim for. Not always possible, of course. The winners rose above the rest because of the moments and the content that surrounded them.

1st: Firefighters wearing dresses. Kind of a no brainer. Nice image and sense of surroundings, would have liked to see it include the boots. Nice picture.

Judges Comments:

HM: This is a nice photograph. The focus bothered the judges. And it simply could have been the photographers pick to focus on the background. It works well the other way too.

Judges Comments:
Weak category overall. winners rose to the top, but needed to be edited tighter with better moments, which is not always possible.

1st: Good vision on this story. Stayed with it and got some good moments. Lot of walking and patience too.

Judges Comments:
3rd: Good lede image, tough light. Rounded out well with the other photos, that worked well for the entire story.

Judges Comments:
Judges felt most of the category was light on good action moments. Some good overall, sense of place photos, that really didn’t apply to the action category. Several images would have worked well in picture stories.

1st: Good action, good framing and seeing the photo before it happened. Nice picture!

SA-Sports-Action 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Kelly Wilkinson
Image:sa_kmwi_01
Judges Comments:
2nd: Good daily picture of action from basketball. Faces and hands make the photo.

SA-Sports-Action 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Michael Caterina, South Bend Tribune
Image:sa_MLCS_02
Judges Comments:
3rd: Good angle, background noise works for the overall integrity of the photo, adding, not detracting, from the action.

SA-Sports-Action HM Place 10 Points
Photographer: Robert Franklin, South Bend Tribune

Judges Comments:
HM: kind of a funny image, obviously not having the ball in the photo hurt the image as a top three contender, but it’s good for us to all look around and see images away from the ball.

SF-Sports-Feature 1st Place Cream of the Crop 60 Points
Photographer: Sarah Ann Jump/The Herald

Judges Comments:
Good category, one of the tougher to judge. 1st: Even thought image had little sports information therein, it’s a true winner because of the content. An informative caption helped too. Excellent content and good reactions on every face.

SF-Sports-Feature 2nd Place 40 Points
Photographer: Alisha Jucevic/The Herald

Judges Comments:
2nd: Funny picture. This is what teenagers do. Sports traditions run deep.

SF-Sports-Feature 3rd Place 30 Points
Photographer: Michael Caterina, South Bend Tribune

Judges Comments:
3rd: After the game scrum. Tilty helps, would’ve like to see more emotion on the athlete above it all.
