Very creative from an otherwise boring assignment. We think it got the readers attention enough to pull them into the story.

The best flow of images and continuity of all the stories. Each photo shows the reader a different part of this child’s life.

Lots of nice faces greeting the runner.

This is a different look at a play at second. The curved line that starts with the second base umpire moves through the runner and ends with the ball.

Winners

First Place: Colts at Franklin College
Joel Philippsen, Columbus Republic
This presentation composed it’s images well and audio over those images. Not
too much talking heads.

Second Place: Land Grab
Sam Riche, Indianapolis Star
This story looked at both sides of the story and used informational graphics
to show the viewer where the roads would be going and what the buildings
will look like if the project is completed.

Third Place: 61 Years of Caring
Matt Detrich, Indianapolis Star
This presentation had great images and audio but both needed an edit. We
felt it was too long and that pushed it down to third place.

There is a nice balance between the two groups of kids. Good on the photog for finding this moment behind the scene at the event. It’s nice that the kids seem unaware of the camera.

Every frame has a place in this series. Photographer does a great job of finding moments at an average assignment. The black and white feels right for the story.

Judges Comments:
It looks like the photographer spent a lot of time with the family working on this story and it shows with the images captured. There are a handful of great frames in here but maybe a few could have been taken out for the final edit.

Nice peak action on this shot. It looks like the picture has already been cropped, wondering why the photog would not have taken more off the bottom as well.
