Judges Comments:
A lot of action and a leading line. Great expression on the kid’s face.

Judges Comments:
Very strong graphic elements and makes a nice pattern.

F-Feature 3rd Place
Photographer: Justin Rumbach, The Herald

Judges Comments:
This photo has great layers that tell the story. Maybe what wasn’t an awesome moment, but has good layering and composition. This makes it more interesting. The girl’s expression draws you in to her.

Judges Comments:
Photo has humor and contrast in the expected and unexpected. It’s a wonderful coincidence.

Judges Comments:
Nice framing and good job for waiting for the right moment. Good use of rule of thirds in constructing the composition of the photo.

Judges Comments:
Strong body language which serves as a leading line to the hearse. Simple and fairly clean.

Judges Comments:
Clever way of illustrating this issue. The eyes and the finger tips are a nice touch of a hint of identify theft.

I-Illustration 2nd Place
Photographer: Rob Goebel/Indianapolis Star

Judges Comments:
The backlighting helps make a clean background. The motion in contrast to the stillness of the other glasses is nice.

I-Illustration 3rd Place
Photographer: Rob Goebel/Indianapolis Star
Image:i_rkgi_02_Mar
Judges Comments:
The swirling motion in the glass is a good way to illustrate and the lighting is clean.

Multiple_Entry 1st Place
Photographer: Chris Howell, The Herald-Times

Judges Comments:
Good variety of images showing multiple aspects (off the court) that take you behind the scenes and introduce you to different characters of the story. It just shows what good access can do to help you tell the story.

Multiple_Entry 2nd Place
Photographer: Robert Scheer, The Indianapolis
Image:ma_RPSI_01
Judges Comments:
Very unique story in that inner city kids are introduced to nature. The photographer did a great job of showing hands on experience with events the kids may have never had before. Really nice interaction moments and a great closer.

Multiple_Entry 3rd Place
Photographer: Matt Detrich/The Indianapolis St
Image:Mb_MLDI_01
Judges Comments:
Good opener and good closer. The opener sets the scene and the closer is a surprise that is very unexpected and not seen very often. The closer is very subtle.

S-Sports 1st Place
Photographer: Sam Riche, The Indianapolis Star
Image:s_srri_04
Judges Comments:
Very unusual. He’s so high and framed well above every one else. You don’t see this as often.

S-Sports 2nd Place
Photographer: Sam Riche, The Indianapolis Star
Image:s_srri_06
Judges Comments:
The composition is chaotic and yet cohesive. You have a focal point in the middle and still have a lot of nice faces to see.

S-Sports 3rd Place
Photographer: Matt Detrich/The Indianapolis St
Image:S_MLDI_05
Judges Comments:
More of a quiet moment where photographer had to pay attention to what’s happening on the sideline. Great body language and expression in Pitino.

S-Sports HM Place
Photographer: Sam Riche, The Indianapolis Star
Image:s_srri_03
Judges Comments:
What’s nice about this photo is the contact between the players, and the arms crossing over and being tangled. It’s also nice and clean.

SN-Spot_News 1st Place
Photographer: Robert Scheer, The Indianapolis
Image:SN_RPSI_01_Jan
Judges Comments:
You’ve got color in a monochromatic scene (the red pops against the background). The expression and body language of the dog shows the emotion of the moment. Very unusual situation. You feel the danger for the dog.

Judges Comments:
The photographer is so close and you really feel like you’re a part of the scene. Great light and detail in the photo.

Beautiful use of color, backlighting and a quiet moment.

F-Feature 1st Place

Judges Comments:
A really humorous moment and the posture of the duck and the positioning of it in the composition add to it. This picture was a real surprise.

F-Feature 2nd Place
Photographer: Matt Detrich/The Indianapolis St
Image:F_MLDI_01
Judges Comments:
Nice capture of a tender moment between friends, which the caption added significance to.

F-Feature 3rd Place
Photographer: Joel Philippsen | The Republic

Judges Comments:
Strong composition and use of low angle and lines to show people enjoying the special place

GN-General_News 1st Place
Photographer: Joel Philippsen| The Republic

Judges Comments:
A slightly tighter crop could have strengthened the image, but the moment between father and stepson made this image standout above all of the other pictures.

Captures the drama of this debate of the state’s legislature. It puts us there and on the floor of the house.

A quiet moment that fits with the story and works around the identification obstacles of the situation.

Judges Comments:
The most well-rounded collection of images in the lot. A good variety of images, strong details and moments. Could have lost a picture or two, but overall a very nice look at this man’s life and love for his craft.

Multiple_Entry 2nd Place
Photographer: Matt Detrich/The Indianapolis St

Judges Comments:
We loved the single image that we awarded in another category, but the photographer took the unplanned event further. This was actually a collection of images that told a story and took us from beginning to end with nicely captured images.

Multiple_Entry 3rd Place
Photographer: Krista Schinagl, The Herald
Image:ma_KJSJ_01
Judges Comments:
A nice documentary about this man’s craft. Not redundant and nice that the photographer captured some daily life images of Renner outside of the “workplace.”

S-Sports 1st Place
Photographer: Rob Goebel/Indianapolis Star
Image:s_rkgi_03
Judges Comments:
Crisp and clean image with a strong moment. Go easy on the saturation, though…

S-Sports 2nd Place
Photographer: Chris Howell, The Herald-Times
Image:S_CAHB04
Judges Comments:
Tones, lighting and color work in this image’s favor. Trophy photos can be cliche but something about this moment is very genuine.

S-Sports 3rd Place
Photographer: AJ Mast, Freelance
Image:S_ajmi_02
Judges Comments:
Nice lighting but a tighter crop would have made it a stronger image.
