The tenderness and warmth of this moment touched us. Simplicity and peace. Just like good acting in a movie allows you to forget about the movie-making and be drawn into the story, we see past the photography here and take in the moment.

Again, it isn’t fancy photography, but the genuine delight on this man’s face that draws us in. That would make it story-telling and that’s what we like to see.

A very funny, unexpected little dog moment. Don’t know how long this grooming took, but we have to think that THE picture happened precisely at this second. Nice job. Nice choice.

We liked that, with all the usual things that happen in a party headquarters on election night, this photographer turned away from the expected, predictable stuff and found this little slice.

An emotional moment reveals a personal story of remembrance, regret, pride, loss and support.

Not universal agreement on this photo. In the end, it prevailed on the strength of the expression/ body language and muscular composition. Nice frame.

Strong, high-energy moment in a strong category. Nice execution. Tight composition. Way to pay attention and be there.

This is one FUN frame! Elegantly filled from corner to corner. It’s hard to stop looking at it. Great job.

Great touchdown moment, punctuated with crisp eye contact that puts a spark into an already fine action photo. Very skillfully done.

We thought this photo did the best job in the category of reporting the human / emotional side of the news event while offering context, too.

We liked the visual irony of the intense volume of dense smoke juxtaposed with the group of (seemingly) calm firefighters plotting their strategy. We don’t doubt for a second the importance or the urgency of these firefighters having a plan before they walk into that stuff. It’s just kind of arresting to see them conferring so close to it.

Good news shot. Might have quickly been strengthened by dropping down to ground level, framing the silhouettes just a bit higher against the flames. But that’s easy for us to say, right?

Photographer worked this story pretty well. Nice variety of views. Probably could have afforded to lose a couple of the pictures.

Ma_CENI_01
Again, nice variety. And again could have been strengthened by a little tighter edit. Some photos have quite a bit of overlap in message, so we think it helps the whole story to choose between them.

Ma_JTRJ_01
A fun story idea. We think that some of the frames could have been made more visually compelling and more story-telling by recomposing with the sky (weather) in mind. A little too “people’s eye-view”, where maybe a low angle might have added information and visual interest.
