Congratulations go out to Jessica Bowman, Marcos Dominguez and Chris Bucher. These three are the winners of the first ever Indiana News Photographers Association Student Shootout, all three are IUPUI students. The task at hand was to do a Day in the Life of something or someone of their choice.

Bowman took 1st place with her story on a slaughterhouse. Dominguez took 2nd with his package on a news gathering team. Bucher took 3rd with his story on Devon, a 4th-grader with ADHD.

Bowman was awarded a nifty camera bag from ThinkTank. Dominguez won a ThinkTank card holder and a book from the Detroit Free Press. Bucher won a ThinkTank card holder.

The Indiana News Photographers held judging for their 2006 still photo contest in Indianapolis, Feb. 23 and 24 2007.

Remember contest judging starts THIS Friday at 9am and continues at 9am on Saturday (maybe earlier)

Prizes!!!!!

Door prizes will be given away through the judging. Attend and get a ticket, but more tickets for more chances to win! Who knows maybe you can even get your prize autographed (by who ever is sitting next to you)!

You have to be present to win, but that is no problem cause why wouldn’t you be present?

 

Judges Presentations

Our judges will be presenting work after dinner on Friday night (~ 7pm) and before judging starts on Saturday (8:30 am). Lets show some respect for these folks and have a nice large crowd to listen and learn.

Why should I attend?

Come on, how many times a year do you just get to sit in a dark room and listen to people talk about photographs?  Worst case scenario you get to ask in hushed tones “why would someone enter that?” Best case you get a little inspiration. Either way, a wicked good time.

But what if only 3 people entered the contest?

Judges for the 2006 INPA Still Photo Contest (2/23 & 24 in Indianapolis) will be:

Heather Stone, staff photographer The Chicago Tribune

Heather Stone has been a staff photographer at the Chicago Tribune since April, 1998. She been assigned to cover a wide variety of stories around the world, ranging from the Sydney Olympics, the funeral of Yasser Arafat in Ramallah to home design in Tokyo.

Before joining the Tribune, Stone was a staff photographer at The Detroit News and the Knoxville News-Sentinel. Previously she had interned at The Washington Post, The Standard-Examiner (in Ogden, Utah), The Commercial–Appeal (Memphis, TN) and The Tennessean (Nashville, TN).

Stone is a cum laude graduate from Western Kentucky University with bachelors’ degrees in French and Photojournalism. She also attended the Université Paul Valéry in Montpellier, France, for one year.

Rick Wilson , staff photographer The Florida Times-Union

Rick Wilson is a native of Troy Ohio graduating from Troy High School in 1985. He started is photographic career at THS shooting for the high school paper and the yearbook. While in high school Rick also started working part time for the Troy Daily News covering high school sporting events, Ohio State and Cincinnati Bengals football games and Cincinnati Reds games.

After high school Rick attended the University of Missouri and Ohio University graduating from OU in 1990 with a degree in visual communications. He did numerous internships for the Troy Daily News, The Corvallis (Oregon) Gazette Times and the Providence Journal in Providence, R.I. Upon graduating College Rick returned to the Troy Daily News as a staff photographer then becoming Chief Photographer.

Rick has since held chief photographer positions at the Arizona Daily Sun in Flagstaff, Arizona and the Lewiston Sun Times in Lewiston, Maine before excepting a position as the lead Jaguars/sports photographer at The Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville, Fl.

He has been at the Times-Union since May of 1995. Rick has covered every Jacksonville Jaguars game in the teams’ history as well as numerous SuperBowl games, Daytona 500s, college football national championship games, PGA golf tournaments and professional tennis tournaments.

Dale Omori, staff photographer, The Cleveland Plain Dealer

Dale Omori has been a staff photographer at The Plain Dealer since 1989.  Before that he worked at the Cincinnati Post.  His career began at The Kettering-Oakwood (Ohio) Times, after graduating from Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio.

 
His work has been recognized by NPPA, the Ohio News Photographers Association, Pictures of the Year International and World Press Photo. In January, Omori switched to shooting video as part of a growing commitment by the newspaper to increase its presence on the Internet.He’ll talk about making that transition as well as his still
photography.
 
He’s married and has two sons, Sam and Jack.
