Photographer: Matt Detrich/The Indianapolis St
Image:F_MLDI_02
Judges Comments:
A very nice moment and creative camera angle.
F-Feature 3rd Place
Photographer: Dave Weatherwax, The Herald

Judges Comments:
Nice family moment. We did question whether the image is made or found.
F-Feature HM Place
Photographer: Dave Weatherwax, The Herald

Judges Comments:
This is a really nice bit of “seeing” by the photographer. It’s a quiet moment that’s well composed.
GN-General_News 1st Place
Photographer: Matt Detrich/The Indianapolis St

Judges Comments:
The eyes and hands and touching tell the story of their struggle and their friendship. Really powerful picture!
GN-General_News 2nd Place
Photographer: Scott M Bort

Judges Comments:
We chuckled at this one. It’s great to see humanity captured by the photographer.
GN-General_News 3rd Place
Photographer: Rob Goebel/Indianapolis Star
Image:gn_rkgi_02
Judges Comments:
A touching moment, but one we’ve seen many times. The photographer should avoid “burning down” the background.
GN-General_News HM Place
Photographer: Dave Weatherwax, The Herald
Image:GN_DMWJ_02
Judges Comments:
A touching moment between mother and son. So often events like these produce trite and staged pictures but this one displays love.
Multiple_Entry 1st Place Cream of the Crop
Photographer: Matt Detrich/The Indianapolis St
Image:Ma_MLDI_01
Judges Comments:
Many telling pictures of the emotive underpinnings of this event were made by the photographer. When photos are brought together, as a package, we see the power of hope and survival.
Multiple_Entry 2nd Place
Photographer: Jeri Reichanadter, The Star Pres
Image:Ma_JLRM_01
Judges Comments:
Out of the chaos of school class pictures this photographer captured telling images of “kids being kids.” The hands photo and the children standing in the hall are two particularly good found moments.
Multiple_Entry 3rd Place
Photographer: Jeri Reichanadter, The Star Pres
Image:Mb_JLRM_01
Judges Comments:
The photographer made three very good pictures in this series: The rooster petting, the children watching the sheep show and the bunny petting. This would have been a stronger entry if the weaker pictures were eliminated.
Multiple_Entry HM Place
Photographer: Dave Weatherwax, The Herald
Image:MA_DMWJ_01
Judges Comments:
The opening, second and last picture in this series are very good. Again, an edit of the weaker pictures would have helped this entry.
S-Sports 1st Place
Photographer: Chris Howell, The Herald-Times

A great moment in an unfamiliar sport that makes me want to know more. Well done.
S-Sports 2nd Place

Judges Comments:
YIKES! A scary moment in any young baseball player’s life. The photographer was ready for this unusual moment.

Staffers from the Detroit News including: David Coates, photographer; Robert Houlihan, Director of Photography; Chris Farina, photo editor; and Dale Young photographer judged the contest. Our general impression was that it was a real pleasure working on your contest, particularly with the online judging features. The software is well thought-out and easy to use. Multiple picture entries were generally too long. Several could have been much stronger fewer images. The story on the high school kids should be followed for the rest of the year and turned into a really strong package. Thanks for thinking of us!

This looks like strong work for the month of December. Times are so tough, it’s good to see that people are making great images at every size organization. Judges are the faculty for the Visual Communications Dept. at the University of South Carolina, School of Journalism & Mass Communications. Denise McGill was a newspaper photographer for six years, and works for various magazines now documenting migration and issues overseas. She teaches photojournalism and video. Scott Farrand was in charge of Graphics for The State newspaper during their glory years. He now teaches infographics and editing. Keith Kenney was a newspaper photographer in Texas in the 1908s. He now teaches communication theory courses.
