Judges

Michael Bocchieri, Senior Photo Editor at Getty Images. Overall the sports category was lacking the most. Some really weak crops, not a lot of tight action, and some just typical boring moments. It was the hardest to judge and make comments about. As I mentioned previously, there were lots of campaign photos that didn’t say much about anything. You shouldn’t include images simply because it has a recognizable face. If it doesn’t tell the story or explains who the person is then it’s just a poor photo of a famous person. Too often we get caught up in the experience of obtaining an image than the actual images themselves.

Judges Commnets:
This kid has personality and it comes through on this photo. He’s destined to be a rock star. Love his body language and expression. However, after reading the caption it leads me to believe that this is an image part of a larger story. The image and caption don’t relate to each other, the photo doesn’t say that this boy has a tumor. But it’s strong enough to stand on it’s own as a feature photo.

F-Feature 2nd Place
Photographer: Matt Detrich/The Indianapolis St

Judges Commnets:
The composition of course draws me in to this photo but it’s the tension in the ballerina’s face that sells me. The juxtaposition of the instructor adds to the graphical elements and grounds the photo. It’s a simple moment, executed well.

F-Feature 3rd Place
Photographer: Erin McCracken
Image:F_ELME_01
Judges Commnets:
This is a terrific moment, her hands and lips say a lot about her concentration and dedication to sign language. Feature photos don’t need to be overly complicated, this makes for a great moment and solid composition.

F-Feature HM Place
Photographer: Rob Goebel/Indianapolis Star
Image:f_rkgi_01
Judges Commnets:
What an interesting image. What I like most is all of the blank faces staring in multiple directions. I think what hurts this is it’s lack of composition, there are a few distracting elements that draw you away from the subject who already blends in with the scene.

Judges Commnets:
I think this is another great moment. It comments a lot about the youth in America. Each teenager has such an empathetic look on their face and their combined body language and the contrast in the environment around them makes this a winner.

Judges Commnets:
This election year I’ve seen a lot of campaign images and so few of them show politicians as real people. Mostly because every opportunity that they are presented to the media that situation is overly orchestrated by someone else. In this month’s clips selections there were a lot of election images and the majority of them had little to say about anything. They seemed to be included because they were just a nice image of relatively famous person. You can tell in this image that Hillary let her guard down, the look on her face shows that she’s able to enjoy herself. It’s a real moment, one that the press rarely sees.

Judges Commnets:
Who doesn’t like to kiss a pig! Great moment and expressions. Very simply tells the story and love the tension between the principal and the pig. Makes me laugh every time I look at it, a good sign of a good photo.

Judges Commnets:
Lately, we see this type of image all too often and it starts to become old hat. This is no fault of the photographer , they were able to make a powerful, emotional image with an event that as a viewer we have been desensitized from.

Multiple_Entry 1st Place
Photographer: Heather Charles, The Indianapolis Star
Image:mb_HLCI_01
Judges Commnets:
Great story here. It introduces our characters well and shows the involement of people outside the family. A few shots seemed repetitive, especially the two detail shots. You already established that there are 5 babies, you don’t need to do it again. I would have liked to see the parents relationship a bit more or the different aspects that the volunteers provide to the family. Overall it has some solid moments and lends itself as good community journalism.

Multiple_Entry 2nd Place
Photographer: Scott M. Bort / Post-Tribune
Image:Ma_SMBM_01
Judges Commnets:
This is solid campaign coverage, it tells the story of the day and puts a good deal of focus on the community’s involvement in politics.

Multiple_Entry 3rd Place
Photographer: Justin Rumbach, The Herald
Image:ma_jtrj_01
Judges Commnets:
Great little feature on often an un-looked upon subject. Some nice moments in the piece that doesn’t get bogged down with typical classroom shots. However, there isn’t one standalone image that tells me that Hall is the lone male teacher.

Multiple_Entry HM Place
Photographer: Heather Charles, The Indianapoli

Judges Commnets:
Good overall coverage of spot news. Shows the human devastation as well as the physical and tells the story completely.

S-Sports 1st Place
Photographer: jim rider
Image:s_jzrs_03
Judges Commnets:
Great use of a unique angle to clean up the background. The positioning of the three players makes for a great composition. Your eye is lead around the photo rapidly but keeps you in the peak action. One thing I would have done differently is to tighten up the crop, the missing feet and partially cut off one bothers me.

S-Sports 2nd Place

Judges Commnets:
Can’t ask for a better jubo photo. Great emotion and personality.

Judges
Fort Worth Star-Telegram editors Paul Moseley, David Kent and photogrphers Gregg Ellman, Jill Johnson, Ross Hailey, Rodger Mallison, Ron Ennis, and M.L. Gray. Judges plead for tighter edits and better cropping. Too much padding of daily photographs that should never have been submitted for a contest. This reduced the impact of the really good images.

This one drew us in, the more you look the more you see, yet we all hoped to see just a bit more of the adult’s face and maybe a tighter crop. Really a nice photo.

Sam Riche
Indiana Flooding
Flooding in Northern Indiana forces many to flee their homes.

Judge’s comments: Incredible you-are-there quality, broadcast quality moments and audio, great effort in getting on boats, and in people’s homes. Might have cut some of the water sounds volume a bit. Really nice work.

Second Place
Christopher Smith
Spelling Bee
Keertan Kini of Munster tries for a second win in the Times Regional Spelling Bee

Judges comments: Top quality all the way, but our favorite for thinking ahead and planning of the shoot, the elimination of contestants, then the naming of the winner from a static camera view was fantastic. Great audio quality, very creative thinking from start to finish.

Third Place
Sam Riche
Colts vs Chargers
The Colts lost their playoff game against the Chargers, ending their season

Judges comments: A very unique shooting style lends itself to the hectic game-day atmosphere, tough enough as it is, but then Sam combined his work with staff images and great soundtrack and you have a really neat, creative way to package all of the different elements. Ran a little long here and there, tighter edits would have kept the excitement high for the short attention span of online viewers. Knockout effort for all involved.

Judges: David Kent, Assignments editor; Ron T. Ennis, Chief Photographer; Jill Johnson, Staff Photographer; Paul Moseley, Director of Photography.

America and Europe. Recently, Benson has been awarded with the 2005
Lucy International Award for Lifetime Achievement in Portraits, the
2005 American Photo Magazine Award for Achievement in Photography and
the 2006 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Scottish Press
Photographers Association. Benson was also given a Doctorate of
Letters from Glasgow University in 2007.

He will narrate a slide show of some of his enduring images and
answer questions from the audience before adjourning. A book signing
will immediately follow the lecture.

This lecture is free to the public and made possible by the Canon
